This past week I had the privilege of witnessing something powerful.
One of the young men our family spent nearly a decade with through travel baseball graduated from Air Force Basic Military Training (BMT) in San Antonio–Lackland. Watching that moment unfold was unforgettable. When he was released from formation and embraced his family and girlfriend, you could feel the weight of the previous seven and a half weeks lift. Discipline, sacrifice, perseverance—all of it culminated in that single moment.
It was inspiring.
During the ceremony, the speaker built his message around three simple phrases:
Make it happen. Make it better. Make it last.
I quickly scribbled the words down. I didn’t fully know why at the time—I just knew they mattered. The more I’ve reflected on them, the more I realize how powerful they can be when applied to life.
Here’s how I’m unpacking them.
Make It Happen
Nike famously says, “Just do it.”
That’s the essence of make it happen.
Too often we wait. We delay. We hesitate.
What are the things you want to accomplish? Who are the people you’ve been meaning to connect with? What dreams or visions have you quietly placed on hold?
Somewhere in your life, there is something you’ve been putting off.
What if today was the day you decided to make it happen?
Take a step. Send the email. Make the call. Start the project.
This young man did exactly that. He said he was going to join the Air Force—and then he followed through. Seven and a half weeks later, he accomplished something few people ever attempt.
He didn’t just talk about it.
He made it happen.
Make It Better
One phrase we repeated often in our home was simple:
“Leave it better than you found it.”
It’s a powerful standard for life.
Are your teams better because you’re part of them? Are your relationships stronger because you invest in them? Do people leave a lunch, meeting, or event feeling encouraged because they spent time with you?
Making things better isn’t complicated. It often comes down to two simple gifts you can offer every day:
- Your full effort
-Your full encouragement
When you show up with both, your presence matters. Your impact grows.
And the spaces you occupy—whether at work, at home, or on the field—become better because you were there.
Make It Last
As I write this, we’re on spring break with our youngest child. Later this month I’ll take a trip with our oldest.
Moments like these remind me that the things that matter most aren’t temporary.
Memories last. Faith lasts. Relationships last.
So the question becomes:
What are the priorities that truly matter in your life?
And are you investing in them in ways that will make them last?
The things that endure are often the simplest:
Generosity. Forgiveness. Patience. Love.
If we focus our energy on these, we build something that outlives the moment.
Something lasting.
Nathan, thank you.
Watching you this week was incredibly meaningful. You entered the Air Force as a young man, and you walked across the field at graduation as a man. Well done, Nate!
A man ready to make it happen, make it better, and make it last.
You reminded me—and everyone there—what commitment, courage, and purpose look like.
And for that, you inspire me.
